The Captain of Your Soul (A Poem)

He has given me a ship to sail

I have no choice but to sail it

I am the master, the captain of my Soul

I have one goal and that is to get Home

I keep a treasure deep in my hold

One more valuable than gold

The most precious of all Cargo

I take this voyage to get it Home

Beware the creatures of the deep

The ones that crawl and creep

Your ship and Cargo they seek to devour

Be vigilant with every passing hour

His breath fills my sails full and bright

He parts the clouds when ‘er it's night

To show me the Star that leads me on

To where others before me have gone

The winds and waves may batter my sides

I make repairs till the storm subsides

With mended sails and polished decks

I know a White Shore is just ahead

Along my journey I see passer-bys

On stranded, ruined ships

Sinking, starving, left to die

They cry out as I sail by

They beg me, “Take my Cargo along with thine.”

I don't understand how they could be so blind

“You are the master, the captain of your soul

You have one goal and that is to get Home.”

Unknown waters lie ahead

with pirates to be dread

I fly my flags high, not ashamed

To show the other ships my aim

The captain goes down with his ship they say

I saw many ships throughout those long days

Captain, Cargo, and ship forever to be

A vain journey now at the bottom of the sea

On foreign beaches sirens beckon to me

Merchant ships glide by, their journey easy

Their holds seem to have twice as much Gold

Trying to lure me in and steal what's in my hold

I search over the waves for the distant Shore

Hurricanes, typhoons all try to toss me off course

But I hold tight to the wheel and raise my sails

Knowing I have but one ship to sail

I don't care if all I have are a couple of boards,

My Cargo underarm, and a scrap of sail

As long as I can lay myself down there

All I have to say is, “Lord, I am here!”
