Dialogue Quest (Exercise)

Dear Leerie,

Today's quest will help you improve your dialogue writing!

1. Dialogue Only, Please!

Give the writing muscles in your brain a workout by composing a short story that ONLY contains dialogue. For an additional challenge, bring in and juggle more than three characters throughout the course of your story.

2. The Eavesdropper

The most important part about dialogue in any story is that it should sound real and natural. The next time you go out, Try to listen in on any conversation between two people (Person A and Person B) for five minutes or so. Listen closely to everything about the way that they exchange their conversation. Then when you go home later do a "fill in the blanks," using Person A and Person B's speech patterns and idiosyncrasies to finish off the conversation on your own.

3. The Outsider

The next time you plan to write a long passage of dialogue, pretend that a stranger in looking on at your characters. Show his perspective from afar. The stranger can't hear what is being exchanged; he can only distinguish their manners, appearances, and actions. You'd be amazed at how much you can determine about two people from merely their body language.

That's all for today!

See you Under the Lamp✨

Your Leerie for the Lord,

M. G. Teagan
