Description Exercise

Dear Leeries,

For today's quest, I thought it would be a fun, mindful exercise to describe a character using nature! It will give the reader something to remember your character by and leave a more lasting impression.

Questions to ask before you start:

  • Which element does your character best represent? Fire, Water (ice), Earth, Air?

  • Next break down the element. Let's say I choose Earth. What is earth composed of? Rocks, mountains, grass, trees, hills, etc.

  • Then choose which of those sub-elements best represent your character. You can combine a couple of them. For instance, if you choose Air, you have day, night, stars, clouds, and wind. You don't just have to stick with just clouds. Sometimes you have to use the other elements that would affect the main element to make it work. I'll choose a tree.

  • What type of tree? Or in what season? Those little questions make a difference. I'll choose a deciduous tree in Autumn. And I'll also keep in mind how I want the environment to affect it. (like wind, rain, shadows or light.)

My results:

She dazzled the audience on the street as she uprooted her brown feet. Her shadowy eyes were hidden from view as her auburn boughs tossed and blew. With a final display of red and orange hues, she swirled and swelled to the symphony of the wind. Like shimmering, rustling leaves of gold, jewelry graced her delicate limbs. She finished by planting herself straight and tall, then she pined and bent but did not fall. She was showered with applause from one and all.

What did you think?

Did it leave more of an impression than just telling you that she was a dancer, and that the dancer had auburn hair, dirty feet (or even shoeless feet), red and orange apparel, gold jewelry, and that she bowed when she finished?!

You can choose to concentrate on just the face, or the person’s entire appearance, like did! Here are some more examples that focus on one part of the person.

(Ex. His laughing face sent out ripples right onto his forehead.)

(Ex. As I took her lifless hand in mine, a miniature map with all its sunken valleys and blue mountain ranges, its cracked earth, and weathered tops, I saw how her hands told a very different story from mine.)

Try it out! Share your character description in the comments below! I'd love to see what you came up with!

See ya under the lamp with another quest soon!✨

Your Leerie for the Lord,
